Thursday 18th October – travelling – windy and cloudy :(
It was a wild night in Peyriac ! Managed to sleep for most of it amazingly
and Mag only had to read for half an hour or so at about 3. No sunrise,
just dark cloud getting slightly less dark! We packed up and left about
9.15 and as we rounded the corner at the bottom of the etang were amazed to
see a huge flock of flamingos – really pink ones and babies trying to
shelter in the bottom corner. Nice to see so any babies as apparently lots
of flamingos died in the bad weather last year – the etang at Leaucate
froze over! We drove to Gruissan the back way and had a look at Nautique
and the usual places, all mad windy and wavy !Stopped at the canal du
robine at Mandirac had a very blustery walk and looked at the herons and
egrets through the binoculars – no unusual ones this time though:( On to
Gruissan which had taken a battering from the onshore winds and the waves
coming onto the beach, covering the beach and going up the canal were
amazing to see!!! The aire was closed too – the season really has
finished! Not that we wanted it but it is usually heaving with campers!
Had our lunch and a little walk on the beach then travelled up the coast to
Bezier and stopped at the 9 locks for a drink, read and walk (it had
started raining but stopped for us to have a walk :)). On to Salagou which
is very dull and windy but beautiful all the same. I have got the going
home blues but we have got free wifi and we did go to Lidl this morning so
there are lots of goodies :) Had quite a while on the computer tonight.
Chatted to Peter on facebook. Had a nice e-mail from Rob, they have been
snowed up! They are getting a bit fed up with Mongolia now so think they
will head for japan then diving in Thailand! They have put some cracking
photos up on facebook too:)
Friday 19th October – windsurf ** gusty and cloudy :(
It was a really rough night again and the wind is horrendous here at Lac
Salagou :(. We had the longest lie in ever and by the time we had done our
exercises we ate our breakfast at 12.15!!! We did our exercises while
airing the bedding on the trees – notice how the sheets are blowing in
the photo! I went sailing on the lake when a local windsurfer turned up
(there is next to nobody here and no other windsurfers which is really
strange!).I did over 30 knots on a lake so that made me a happy boy:) –
it was very gusty and not much fun really and I have a dodgy wrist making
holding the boom painful :( I had had the going home face on earlier!:( We
have a new neighbour who is very nice, Rudy, a 75 year old Dutch man who
lives in Germany and spends spring and autumn travelling in his small
camper van :) He chatted to us about birds and vultures and talked to me
lots more times when I was setting up and packing away his gear. Dan our
youngest texted to say he had been night manager on Tuesday and that had
all gone really well and they were looking forward to their holiday, last
shift of the job for jay tomorrow and Dan’s last one before their
fortnight off. Then Rob our eldest texted and said they could get Skype in
Mongolia if we had wifi which amazingly at Salagou we have:) So Mag got
to talk to him for about an hour:) They are having a fantastic time and
even went on a horse ride to see a Genghis Khan statue! He has never liked
getting near horses so that was an amazing adventure! They are off to
China now that they have wheeled and dealed the things they need for a
Visa!! Mag seemed to be on the computer talking to Rob and sorting bits
and pieces out for most of the afternoon but when I had finished sailing
and before I took my wet suit off we cleaned the van as it was absolutely
filthy and covered in sea spray from our stay at Peyraic and the visits to
various beaches in this onshore wind. While I packed up Mag went for a
long walk over to the spot where we parked last time and he met me on the
way back. Although the wind hasn’t let up all day and the sky is
absolutely full of dark grey clouds and it looks like it should be pouring
it still hasn’t rained and the wind is quite warm! The lake however is
absolutely freezing so we won’t be swimming this time:(
